I Do...

Not Know What I'm Doing. Help.

One of my best friends asked me to be her maid of honor. Tears were shed. And after the initial excitement...

Fear set in.

I want her 2010 spring wedding day to be perfect. The duties of a maid of honor are way more than I thought so I'm lucky that my beautiful bride-to-be has been patient with my busy schedule. But never did I imagine to be so knee-deep in taffeta and table cloths in my mid-20s.

We almost started crying while combing through gigantic wedding gowns at a bridal store. (Wedding gowns are HEAVY folks). We surveyed the beautiful Laguna Beach site and we fought those pesky tears while someone else's wedding rehearsal was happening in the background. We're also flipping through so many bride's magazines we are soon to be the reigning paper cut queens.

But in the end, I wouldn't trade this new, fascinating and stressful experience for anything. This is after all, an honor. If you have any fabulous tips for this first-time MOH, I'll toss the bouquet to you myself.

I've only been a MOH one time, but the best advice I can give is to keep her calm. If you can keep her calm and collected, your life will be easier. She freaks out, you will freak out. Keep things simple. Also, there are a ton of ways to get around the more expensive things (like buying her dress), just call around to a few different places to get prices. Congrats to you and her!

I am a bride now and all I hope for in my MOH is that she lets me bounce ideas off of her. That she rolls her eyes when I go slightly bananas and on the day of she keeps me calm. I am sure she asked you to be her MOH because you guys are really close (that's why I asked mine) so just do whatever it is you do that makes you her best friend in the first place.

It is an honor but it can be stressful. I've never been an MOH but there was one year where I was in 5 weddings right in a row. I felt like my head was going to spin off.

The most key thing about being MOH is...

DO NOT FORGET TO ARRANGE HER TRAIN/DRESS THE DAY OF THE WEDDING!!! On the alter, for pictures, getting in and out of the limo, etc. I was soooo bad at this for my BFF's wedding. = (

Other than that, just be the best friend to her that you have been for years. You know her, what she needs and what she likes. Plan a fun bachelorette party and a girly shower. Take your cues from her. They will be there.

Good luck and congrats!

The main thing is that the rest of her life should be happy! People spend SOO MUCH time agonizing over the wedding day that they forget that this is a big step before the rest of her life...of course, the wedding day is a big deal but let's not forget the big picture - the happy life that (hopefully) continues after the big day!

Swagbucks - search and win! It's another way of doing google searches (you'll get the same great results) but you get points/swagbucks for some of the searches you do and then you can redeem your "bucks" for different prizes/gift cards.
Plus, you'll get 3 swagbucks just for signing up!!

I think just listening and being there for her is the best thing. She will assign you different tasks, but sometimes coming up with your own ideas or doing things unspoken speak volumes for your friend. Hope everything goes well!

She's a lucky girl! I was the MOH at my bff's wedding...just be there, be supportive, make her laugh to ease her nerves. It's a total honor and you'll be amazing!

I was the maid of honor in my sister's wedding last year. The best thing for you to do is just be there for the bride. Stress will surely dampen her spirits one time or another so you are there to cheer her up.

Congrats! I have been a maid of honor once and a bridesmaid often. Just offer her any help to relieve her of stress. Keep her smiling and plan her one hell of a bachelorette party! Send her off right and just enjoy the expereience!

i've been a MOH twice, and a bridesmaid 4 other times, so i'm fairly well-versed at this.

tips:

*get started early. make as many lists as you can possibly think of.

*small gestures go a long way. have bottled water for the bride when you go to appts. bring snacks, etc.... my MOH did this for me and i loved it and tried to do this when i was a MOH.

*be prepared to do whatever it possibly takes to make the bride feel beautiful...and relaxed. and the day of the wedding....be prepared to never get a free minute until after your speech. MOH basically equals a glued-to-her-side serving attendant that day. she will love you for it.

*involve the bridesmaids in some of the planning early or you'll be footing the bill on a lot of things which gets super expensive.

*make an emergency kit. at the last wedding i was in the bride's super-thin strap on her plunging-v dress snapped and i was very glad i'd brought along a sewing kit.

ummmmm.....that's all i can think of for now. basically just do everything for her that you'd want your MOH to do for you in the midst of your demanding bride-ness, because even if you're friend is fairly laid-back....every bride has her moments :).

good luck!
